Bibliography

Northwest PA Poetry Bibliography

Introduction:  I am creating this bibliography (an on-going project) to identify local writers whose work needs to be celebrated and is part of Erie’s cultural history.  Before I began this, I knew several local contemporary poets, but when I asked about poets from the past, the information I received was incomplete.  It struck me that our local poets’ work has been vanishing or will vanish without some effort to record what has been created so that future writers may learn from it and be inspired by it.  All of these works are part of Erie’s cultural legacy and yet we are in danger of losing the majority of it.  This is a continuous work and will be updated as more materials are found.

In compiling this bibliography, I have noticed some issues that could bear more investigation.

  1.  There are significant gaps in the timeline of these works.  There are fewer resources listed prior to 1970 than newer works.  It is hard to imagine that works weren’t created, but identifying them has been difficult.  More works needs to be done to identify earlier works to create a more comprehensive bibliography.

  2. Many of the citations are incomplete.  If others can assist in completing the missing data, that would be extremely helpful.

  3. While Erie has many contemporary poets and there are multiple poetry events, there seems to be no recognition of earlier works or their impact on current writers or Erie’s literary culture.    These older works need to be revived, examined, and brought back into the public sphere.

  4. While this bibliography may have some value, there is no single archive where this material is collected, preserved, and made accessible.  Collecting bibliographic citations is important, but is not more important than preserving the actual works themselves for the future.

  5. Erie has been the home to multiple small independent presses over the years.  These small presses are themselves worthy of further investigation to create a richer cultural history of Erie.

  6. Erie is rich in poetry and there are many poets, past and present.  Additional work needs to be done to establish a more visible, coherent poetry community in Erie and Northwestern Pennsylvania that includes poets, educational and cultural organizations, and others interested in the craft of poetry.

Scope Note:  This bibliography contains English language printed books or chapbooks of poetry or mostly poetry.  There is no non-fiction nor fiction.  The poets included in this bibliography are identified as Erie poets, Northwestern Pennsylvania poets or poets who have been published by an Erie publisher.   The definition is broad and is meant to be an inclusive, not an exclusive feature, for writers. Authors in this bibliography may have published in other genres or media, but those works are not included in this bibliography. At this time, the bibliography does not contain digital resources or other recorded resources.  That may change as more material comes to light. This bibliography also contains Erie publishing imprints that may contain works from non-Erie writers.

This bibliography makes no judgement on the quality of the works produced and there has been no attempt to censor language that some may find offensive.

Any inconsistencies or mistakes in the bibliographic citations are mine only.  Corrections are gladly welcomed.
